So, Do you guys know about your gums ? Like seriously all you consider in your oral cavity is your teeth and tongue but do you know gums also plays an equally important role in your mouth!
So today we are here to discuss all about the gum health ! So, basically what are these gum diseases which we are talking about ?
Diseases of gums are pathological conditions of the gum and the bone support or the periodontal tissues which are inflammatory in nature !
Most commonly we have two types of diseases which occur in people :
Gingivitis : Inflammation of gums which is seen most commonly in people due to poor oral hygiene or underlying diseases.
Periodontitis: inflammation which extends to the underlying bone and tissues of the teeth.
So, let’s talk more about the inflammation extending to your bones and tissues of teeth ie. Periodontal inflammation or periodontitis.
This disease shows various manifestation as follows :
- Formation of pockets within the gums
- Recession of gums and furcation involvement
- Periodontal destruction leading to mobility of teeth.
- In Severe cases loss of tooth is seen.
What are the risk factors for periodontal diseases ?
There are various factors which decide the propagation of this disease in any person.
- The rate of attack of the bacterial species or it’s virulence nature decides the amount of destruction of the periodontal fibers .
- Underlying diseases like diabetes , leukaemia , Down syndrome , HIV infection i.e immunocompromised patients are at more risk.
- Smokers are again at high risk of periodontal diseases.
- Diet can also have a great impact on the severity of the disease.
- Patients under stress are another people who are at high risk for such diseases.
How to prevent such gum diseases from happening ?
It’s already seen that in many people,gum diseases can be prevented by religiously practising plaque removal and maintaining good oral hygiene.
- Proper brushing technique should be followed for removal of debris and plaque from getting deposited on the teeth.
- Flossing regularly can help in removing the stuck debris and preventing plaque formation in between the teeth or the embrasures.
- Good diet, preventing stress and stopping smoking can help people in maintaining good oral hygiene.
The oral and general health of the body is linked so not only these measures are to be followed but taking good care of your health also helps in preventing such diseases . For ex diabetic and leukaemia patients are at higher risk of severe periodontal diseases.
